Personalize your email, but not with their name

Customers are more interested in the relevancy of your email to a problem they need to solve than the use of their name in the email. Are you emailing them about something relevant or are you just taking your chances with a fishing exercise? If it’s the latter, you are more likely to end up with an unsubscribe. 

If you don’t have the information you need to create “perfect relevancy”, try to at least include information that acknowledges a subscriber’s individuality (e.g., purchase history or demographic) so that they have reason to believe that the email was sent with good intent.

 

The Subject Line

You need to capture attention with the subject line AND you need to do it with a small number of characters to make that it all appears in a mobile Gmail user interface.

Research indicates that emails with the best open rates aren’t being sent from 9 to 5. They are sent at night. Inbox crowding is a problem. If your email goes out when very few others do, it stands a greater chance of getting noticed.

Your email design needs to be responsive in order to make sure that your email looks great on all devices. Some mobile design tips:

  • Use a one column template for an easy mobile fix.
  • Increase the font size for improved readability on smartphones.
  • Follow the iOS guideline of buttons (more than 44 pixels wide by 44 pixels tall).
  • Make call-to-action obvious and easy to tap try to place them above the fold.
